WHO IS ZAINAL ABDUL HALIM?

Zainal Abdul Halim, an Ex REUTERS Photographer, who has been working with the agency for more than 10 years. Mention his name, the name would surely earn respect and admiration among Malaysian photographers in general and Malaysian photojournalists in particular. Zainal Abdul Halim, a Reuters photographer/photojournalist is a well known and respectable figure in Malaysia especially in the Malaysian photographic fraternity. He is a classic example of a success story for a self-taught photographer.
Having started merely as a hobbyist, he eventually landed a job at The Sun (A Malaysian Daily) as a photographer and was promoted only 6 years later to the post of Chief Photographer.
From being a chief photographer at a Malaysian local daily he made a further progress to secure a job at Reuters as one of its photographers in Malaysia – the job which only remains a dream to most of the photojournalist wannabes.
WHAT IS HIS EXPERIENCE LIKE?
Zainal Abd Halim been to a lot of conflict zones in the world such as, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Timur Timor (timur Leste) to name few. He Had also covered the fall of Soeharto. Benazir Bhutto, Few days befor her death. He also covered The Olympics and all of the major sport events in the world. And now, he will giving his Photojournalism Workshop for the First time in Borneo (Kota Kinabalu) on the 15-18 of July 2010. What is PHOTOJOURNALISM?
Photojournalism is a particular form of journalism (the collecting, editing, and presenting of news material for publication or broadcast) that creates images in order to tell a news story. It is now usually understood to refer only to still images, but in some cases the term also refers to video used in broadcast journalism. Photojournalism is distinguished from other close branches of photography (such as documentary photography, social documentary photography, street photography or celebrity photography) by the qualities of:
Timeliness — the images have meaning in the context of a recently published record of events.
Objectivity — the situation implied by the images is a fair and accurate representation of the events they depict in both content and tone.
Narrative — the images combine with other news elements to make facts relatable to the viewer or reader on a cultural level.
Like a writer, a photojournalist is a reporter but he or she must often make decisions instantly and carry photographic equipment, often while exposed to significant obstacles (physical danger, weather, crowds)

The Workshop
The workshop will be held in Kota Kinabalu from 15th of july until 18th of July 2010. Kota Kinabalu is choosen for this workshop is because its a city where the cultures of the diverse people of Borneo intermingle. Sabah is known locally as ‘The Land Beneath the Wind’ as it sits directly below the monsoon belt to the north. It is rich in local culture and heritage and it’s other name ‘The Land of the Sacred Mountain’ reflects the spiritual beliefs of the local people that Mount Kinabalu is an ancient mystical place where their ancestors go to watch over them.
